Driving through N.M. last hols, felt like we were visiting a police state. Thought the Border patrol guy said "Ja vol, your papers please..." but musta misheard.

All of us having dark brown hair, brown eyes and olive skin means they always stop our car to ask if we're American citizens, rather than wave the car through.

Nice place to visit....

I say open the borders(not really). Diversity is the spice of life. Americans have for years now lived the easy life (compared to the rest of the world). Seems to me to many Americans have become lazy and dont know what it is to put in a hard day of work. We are at the bottom of most list when it comes to the education of our kids. Im amazed that more Americans arent embarrassed by the state of our country. Were in for a rude awakening.

I have the same problem Persephone. My name also doesn't help matters much, (although it's Greek, most automatically think Arabic) especially when taking flights and receiving those dubiously "random" aside searches. Maybe I just have bad luck every flight.

Yeh, AnimalsFC, we get the "random" checks too, especially arriving in LAX. It's an intimidation technique, I think, as much as a 'security' measure. We thought the staff were pretty insensitive in the last check we went through, too.

Almost tore our little girl's favourite doll apart, making rude jokes about its worn-out look, in front of her. The puffer box (explosives detector) is intimidating enough for an adult, but pretty scary for a four year old.

The message is "if you so much as look like a potential threat, we're gonna CHECK YOU OUT". Their criteria seems to be: brown skin, dark hair, long beard, Arabic sounding name etc = possible terrorist.

When you think of how all this is a counter-measure to protect the U.S. from those who have a grudge to bear about U.S. military actions, it's just a joke, really.
